Sports and Recreation in Hobart, IN

Green park field and walking trail in Hobart

Hobart is a good place for people who like to be active. The city has 14 parks, a public 18-hole golf course, and many sports fields for basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and rugby. It also has a lake, a large county park, and trails that link to Indiana Dunes National Park. Whether you play, watch, or just want fresh air, here is where to go.

Deep River County Park

Deep River County Park is the biggest recreation area in the city. It covers 1,362 acres and opens at 7 a.m. every day of the year. It closes at dusk. The park has several entrances, and each one leads to a different mix of activities.

Along Old Lincoln Highway, you will find the historic area, the grist mill, and the wedding gazebo. The County Line Road entrance has picnic shelters you can rent, a little free library, and a playground. The Ainsworth Road entrance leads to Big Maple Lake, where you can fish from the bank and walk a lake trail. Boats are not allowed on Big Maple Lake, and ice fishing is not allowed at any Lake County park.

The park also has horse and hiking trails, a river canoe launch, and educational programs. Visit in September or October for tractor-driven hayrides. More Details on hours, rentals, and events are on the Lake County Parks page.

Deep River Water Park

The Deep River Water Park opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day. It is one of the largest public water parks in the country. Families come from across Northwest Indiana for slides, pools, and open space to relax. In winter the site hosts an ice plaza, so it stays busy for much of the year. Arrive early on hot weekends, since lines grow by midday.

Lake George

Lake George is the center of outdoor life in town. Fishing and boating are both popular here. Anglers fish from the shore, the dam area, and the docks. Paddlers launch canoes and small boats from Festival Park.

The lake also hosts two big events. The Lakefront Festival takes place in August. The Clocktower Model Boat Race runs in September, and it draws builders who bring remote-controlled boats to race on the water. Both events are free to watch.

Festival Park and Lakefront Park

Festival Park and Lakefront Park sit side by side along the water. A covered bridge at the dam links them. You can walk, jog, or push a stroller along the shore. Summer brings a farmers market, concerts, and outdoor movies. The Revelli Bandshell hosts music in the warm months, and the clock tower area is another favorite spot for performances.

Oak Savannah Trail

The Oak Savannah Trail is a rails-to-trails route that runs through Hobart. It is flat, which makes it good for beginners, kids, and anyone who wants an easy ride. The trail passes the 90-acre Hobart Prairie Grove Unit of Indiana Dunes National Park. Bring water and a hat in summer, because shade is limited in some stretches.

Hobart Nature District and Prairie Preserves

The city has a designated Hobart Nature District. The Shirley Heinze Land Trust owns preserves in town, including a tallgrass prairie. The Cressmoor Prairie is a state nature preserve and the largest state-protected black soil prairie in Indiana. Walks here are quiet and good for birding and photos.

Brickie Bowl and High School Sports

Hobart High School teams go by the Brickies. Friday night football at the Brickie Bowl is a long-standing tradition, and the crowd is loud and friendly. Basketball, baseball, soccer, and track also draw local fans. If you are new in town, a high school game is the fastest way to feel part of the community.

Deep River Grinders Vintage Baseball

Baseball fans should see a Deep River Grinders game. The team plays by 1858 rules and wears period uniforms. The field sits in the historic area of Deep River County Park. It is a relaxed, family-friendly event that feels different from a modern game.

Golf, Fields, and Pickup Games

The city has a public 18-hole golf course that is open to anyone. Parks around town have fields and courts for pickup games and league play. If you want to start a weekend game, ask at city hall about field rentals and schedules.

Day Trips Nearby

Indiana Dunes National Park is a short drive north, with beaches and trails along Lake Michigan. Marquette Park in Gary is close as well. Both make a good second-day trip if you want a larger outdoor adventure.

Tips for Getting Started

Check hours before you go, because some park areas close at dusk. Bring bug spray in summer and layers in fall. Buy a fishing license if you plan to fish. Park at the main lots and walk, since many of the best views are on foot.

Hobart has a sport or outdoor activity for almost everyone. Pick one that fits your pace, and try something new each month. Read More about the trees that shade these parks, trails, and yards.
